Notes from OMX 2019
Cam Calkoen recently joined us for OMX and the OMP10 implementation day in Sydney. Cam was born with cerebral palsy, but with an intense workout for many years at a young age, and believing and challenging parents, he overcame the depression that life with a disability can present to become an Olympic sprinter. Clocking in at 12.26 seconds for the 100m he became one of the 10 fastest people in the world with a similar body type. Cam is a wonderful example of what is possible when we think big and believe we can achieve something truly AWESOME.
OMX was held in the Hunter Valley this year at the recently renovated Spicers Guest House. The three-day Program, exclusive to Owner Manager alumni used an expert and peer coaching approach to really challenge participants on key facets of their business. We changed the format slightly from last year to give greater time for discussion and the opportunity to focus more deeply on an individual’s business and the application of the topic at hand.
So many conferences and modern learning activities are superficial (because we’re impatient and time poor) and don’t give participants time to truly reflect after acquiring new knowledge and be challenged by their peer as they map out how they will apply the learning on a day-to-day basis. Albert Einstein said
“Any fool can know. The point is to understand.”
In my experience that understanding comes through application. Bruce Lee once said
“Knowing is not enough, we must apply. Willing is not enough, we must do.”
All that we do within the Australian Owner Manager Programs is about a knowledge, reflection, and application following the action learning methodology and framework. When we follow this approach, we get real and lasting change and move away from “insanity” - doing the same things and expecting a different result.
One participant said that OMX paid for itself in the first week with a few tips he picked up from another commercial builder in the room. We were discussing the construction value chain and the approach to managing sub-contractors. Understanding the mindset of the commercial builder, helped him develop a new and profitable approach when negotiating a contract two days after the program.
Back to Cam… so much of what we do is about mindset. Our biggest enemy is generally the one inside us, that tells we can’t when we CAN.
