8 Short Stories from Real Owners

Real stories from owner manager program

It’s one thing to claim that a program can change lives, but it’s another to see those changes unfold. For many business owners, the Owner Manager Program isn’t just a course—it’s a turning point. Whether navigating generational transitions, preparing for exit, or seeking clarity in future growth, participants leave with more than just new tools; they leave with a renewed sense of purpose and direction.

In the stories that follow, we’ll share how these owners faced critical moments in their businesses and the positive changes that emerged after completing the program. Each example offers a glimpse into the transformations that happen when knowledge, confidence, and vision align.

More time with family

Liam, and his brother Doug, are both entrenched in their multi-faceted family business. Both have young families and want to be able to have more quality time with them. Before the program, this was a pipe dream only.

Having both done the program, they set about building a leadership team and systems that would allow them to take some long service leave. Liam is currently mid-way through a 6-month adventure with his young family in Europe, and Doug is making plans for his own family adventure around Australia next year.

Ready for exit, but no way out

John knew he wanted out of his business within the next 5 years, but “how?”, he had no idea. After doing the Owner Manager Program he set about implementing strategies and plans that would add value to the business and allow him to step out from the day-to-day management. When it came time to sell, he was prepared, he got top dollar and is now enjoying retirement in the best way possible.

Looking to hand over the reins to the next generation

Julie was looking for a program for her son to do, as she was hoping to hand over the reins of their multi-generational business to him. Instead, she took the Owner Manager Program first – this gave her the confidence and clarity needed to pass the baton on. Her son, Peter, took the program soon after, and is now armed with the tools, strategies and confidence needed to take their business into the future.

Buying a brand new business

Sarah had been in business with her husband for over 10 years, but it was time for her to step out on her own and buy a business herself. Having just taken ownership within a week of starting the program, she saw it as an opportunity to give her the skills “to do it right from the start”. Having now completed the program, she agrees it was the perfect time to do it – avoiding all the wasted time doing it the wrong way.

Growing at an alarming rate!

Brett and his cousin started a business together in the thriving mining industry, and it soon took off – growing exponentially year-on-year. Young and eager to learn, they knew they needed some help to set up systems and strategies that could handle the growth and avoid burn out. The OMP gave them exactly what they needed and from an outsider looking in, you’d think these guys had been in business 30+ years!

Bored and unmotivated

Graham had been in business more than 25 years, business was good, but it was starting to plateau – and so was his motivation to keep going. Having been recommended the program from a supplier, Graham took a leap and had a go. After doing the OMP, Graham now has a renewed sense of passion for his business – he’s now keen to expand, innovate and get things done.

Never had any formal education

Brian had been a tradie since high school, and like many others, found himself running a fairly successful business 10 years later. Having not done any formal education since high school, he was looking for a course to improve his financial acumen and improve his management skills. A little nervous about attending the program, Brian was soon put at ease with the practical approach (no studying or tests required!). Now armed with a better understanding of his finances and marketing position, along with strategies and skills to manage his business better, Brian feels confident to lead his business in the direction he wants.

Left to run the business on her own

Jane bought a business with her brother – it was his idea and passion. Her brother tragically passed away and Jane was left with a manufacturing business and 250 employees to manage on her own. The OMP was a turning point for Jane. It gave her the confidence and connections to implement some groundbreaking people and management strategies that have seen her business flourish beyond her expectations. She now has the time and money to invest in more businesses, cementing a passion for entrepreneurship.
